WRITE A LETTER

As we keep working our way through the "10 Ways to Grow More Good," there was bound to be an entry on the list that would meet with some skepticism. "Writing a letter" might be that entry. Which, to be fair, is understandable. How can something as simple as writing a letter help "grow more good" around the world? The answer to that question, like the act of letter writing itself, is surprisingly simple.

"Whether your handwriting is a delicate swooping cursive or a barely legible doctor's script, it is yours alone."

When we write letters, and, to be clear, we're talking about handwritten communication, actual pen and paper style; we are doing more than just putting your thoughts on paper.

When we write a letter, we create a physical artifact of a relationship, a link between you and the recipient. It is a link that is tangible and real, complete with scents and textures, that takes up physical space. And it is entirely unique because you wrote it. It's not pixels on a screen or data on a hard drive; it's your handwriting.

Whether your handwriting is a delicate swooping cursive or a barely legible doctor's script, it is yours alone. It is the only one that ever existed. It isn't a font option on a screen or a typeset on a printer; it is your handwriting.

And it is unique and entirely individual and something worth celebrating!

"We escape the immediacy of the moment and give ourselves time to communicate."

As we move towards better-produced products, we must remember to avoid When we write, we give ourselves time to think, edit, revise, and rework the things we are trying to say. We escape the immediacy of the moment and give ourselves time to communicate rather than just respond. We are absolved from the unrealistic expectation that what we think and say at the moment during a text exchange or an email chain or a slack thread is our most thought-out idea and, truly, represents the message we are trying to deliver.

What we love the most about writing letters and, perhaps, our favorite way it helps grow the good is: who doesn't love getting a letter! It is an immediate day brightener whenever you recieve a letter in your mailbox.

So whether you are writing a letter to a friend or family member, to a stranger or a state representative, just know you are brightening someone's day just from the simple act of sending it.
